What is XPS?

XPS is a material widely used in construction as insulation, due to its thermal properties. It’s a high-density foam which offers a more refined finish than EPS polystyrene counterparts.

What are the benefits of this material over traditional materials?

It is much lighter than traditional counterparts, which makes it simpler to handle, transport and install – it can easily be done by a single person. Using adhesive rather than a cement-based product to stick it on also means that there is reduced curing time required between installation and painting.

Can you customise the design?

Yes, please contact us to discuss your requirements, and we will provide you with details on cost and turnaround time. We will also be able to provide you with some visualisation of your design in-situ.

Can it be used outdoors?

Our cornices are primarily designed for indoor use. While they can handle occasional exposure to moisture, extended exposure to direct sunlight and harsh outdoor conditions may cause them to deteriorate over time. 

What is the environmental impact of your cornice?

Our cornice is manufactured from recycled packaging polystyrene, which is diverted from landfill, and collected from communities across Australia. It is made without the use of ozone-depleting chemicals.

Is the material considered a fire-hazard?

Our products are manufactured from raw material containing a flame retardant additive and are not a fire hazard when correctly installed. The foam will burn when in contact with a flame, like other organic building materials, but it will self-extinguish when the fire source is removed.

Installation

Which trades can install your cornice?

The relative ease of use means that our cornice can be easily installed by most trades. We have had successful installation projects delivered by plasterers, carpenters, cabinet makers, painters or even our customers themselves tackling it as a DIY project.

Do I need to remove old cornice to use your products?

Depending on the size, you may be able to avoid removing old cornice. Our classic profile designs offers a sufficient void at the back which will fit over smaller cornice. For larger cornice (90mm cove), we offer a special range of cornice covers.

What kind of adhesive should I use to stick the cornice on?

Use a water-based construction adhesive, or an acrylic gap filler. We do not recommend using cornice cement as the primary adhesive to the wall and ceiling as it does not quite create the same chemical bond with the material.

Can I install the cornice on painted surfaces?

Yes, the lightweight nature of the material and the properties of the adhesive makes it possible to install on painted surfaces that are in good condition. Note that peeling and bubbling may be signs of other issues and should be addressed prior to installation.

How do I cut the cornice?

Use a fine tooth saw to cut the cornice using a standard mitre box. Professionals can also use powered drop saws or miter saws for a very clean cut. When using a handsaw, clean up cut edges with a light sanding block.

How do I finish the joints?

Joints can be finished using the adhesive or an acrylic gap filler for simple solution.  Smooth over gaps using your finger, and wipe away excess filler with a damp cloth or sponge. For a more professional finish, a lightweight interior filler can be used. Light sanding with a fine grit sandpaper is fine, but should be kept to a minimum.

What kind of paint should I use?

For best results, first coat with a water-based 3-in-1 undercoat / primer / sealer, after which you can choose between a few options, based on your preference of finish. 

For a completely flat finish, use a water-based ceiling paint. For a glossy finish, use a water-based high-gloss enamel or for something in between, you can use a water-based semi-gloss enamel. Coat generously.

Can I repair accidental damage?

Yes, accidental damage during installation can be easily repaired using a lightweight filler (e.g. Selleys Spakfilla).

Do you ship to my state, town or suburb?

We use courier services to ship our products all across Australia, which means that we have pretty extensive coverage and can get our products almost anywhere in the country. Please contact us to get a quote on shipping costs to your area.

Which payment methods do you accept?

Our online store accepts American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Union Pay & Paypal. In store payment is available through EFTPOS. We also allow bank transfers.

Can I pick up my order in store?

Yes, please call us to arrange a time for pick-up from our Huntingdale store.

Can I arrange my own shipping?

Yes, if you would prefer to arrange your own shipping, please contact us to arrange. We will send you the package dimensions and weight, and let you know the appropriate times to arrange the pick-up.
