Did you know that our cornice is made from recycled material, diverting thousands of cubic meters of packaging polystyrene from landfill, and instead, giving it another useful purpose.
Recycling packaging polystyrene
It all starts with collecting clean EPS polystrene from local communities through poystyrene recycling collection points across Australia. These are often found at local council waste management points or often also placed strategically at polystrene manufacurers premises.
This waste is then recycled locally, and not shipped overseas for processing, which reduces both the CO2 burden as well as waste going to landfill. The waste management and recycling process is done locally, creating local jobs, and stimulating the economy.
This process is facilitated by Styrocycle, who are committed to reducing expanded polystyrene (EPS) waste sent to landfills to ZERO.
By promoting polystyrene foam recycling and encouraging EPS packaging recycling at the community level, we strive to make recycling EPS foam accessible for everyone. Through partnerships with local councils, businesses, and EPS manufacturers, we are diligently working to create a network for expanded polystyrene recycling that supports a sustainable, zero-waste model.
Transforming waste into something useful
The recycled waste is turned into pellets, and is used in the manufacturing of high-density XPS, a product widely used in Australian contstruction and is material of choice for home builders, specifiers, architects and engineers due to its high compressive strength and excellent thermal performance. It contains up 100% recycled material, diverted from landfill.
Produced with no refrigerants and free from HCFCs, Foamex’s Styroboard XPS is a truly green building product.
All Foamex XPS foam products are manufactured from a fire-retardant raw material and do not present as a fire hazard when correctly installed. Like other organic materials, polystyrene will burn when in contact with a flame, but it will self-extinguish when the fire source is removed.
Foamex XPS board is entirely free from Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a flame retardant that was commonly used in polystyrene insulation materials. This omission of HBCD is highly beneficial as it promotes a safer and more eco-friendly solution for insulation needs, ensuring reduced potential for harmful chemical exposure and contributing to the overall improvement of environmental sustainability.
Other features of Foamex’s XPS boards include:
- Durable and sturdy for long lasting applications
- Australian made and manufactured
- Complies with Australian Building Standards AS1366.4
- Lightweight and easy to handle
- Environmentally friendly – HCFC free
- High compressive strength
- KPA rating that exceeds BCA regulations
- Low moisture absorption
- Long term retained R-values
From insulate to decorate
The team at The Cornice Store use Foamex’s XPS board as the raw material in the manufacture of our cornice products.
The manufacturing process as well as all sales and administrative operations are run locally, out of Melbourne in Australia.
Our innovative and scalable manufaccturing process is clean, and allows us to collect 100% of the manufacturing waste, and return it for recycling, starting the cycle again.
So there you have it. Through local innovation and ethical sourcing, we take waste destined for landfill, and give it a second life beautifying Aussie homes in a cost effective and easy to use manner.
No mining the earth for gypsum, and no shipping back and forth between countries.
